Day 45

August 14, 2023

It's kind of funny, I grew up thinking my hometown was tiny. We had a population that hovered around 50,000 people, but it always felt like there was just never anything to do. There was a little bit of stuff you could do, but it was pretty much all outdoors only. And in Arizona, where it hits triple digits in March at the latest - who wants to be outside? But Lake Havasu is an enormous city compared to some of the ones we've been through on this trip, and Ely is another pretty little place. It has a population of about 4,000, and doesn't seem like there's much to do aside from gambling. There were some fun little dinosaur statues outside of the Prospector Hotel, though, so bonus points there.

Our initial plan was to try to hit some kid-friendly stuff in Boise, but some road construction quickly spoiled that plan. The places we planned to visit all closed around 4:30, and it was a 6-hour drive plus a time change away, so we probably could have made it from our hotel without stopping even once and then had about 30 minutes there, but (a) we can't make it more than about an hour without stopping to use the bathroom and (b) we wound up sitting waiting for some road construction crews to let us pass for about 20 minutes.

We scrapped that plan, and "K" did some scouting from the car, eventually finding a nice little park with a playground in Boise. "little" isn't the right word for it, this park was huge and quite popular. We stopped in at the Ann Morrison Park and there were a TON of people here. Most seemed to be there to run or for river access (apparently tubing is a big thing there), but we made use of the playground. The kids had a blast, and we stayed here for about 45 minutes.

Once we left Boise, we had about another hour drive to our hotel, located in Ontario, Oregon. We did it, officially hitting all 48 states this summer. I can't believe it, we did it. I mean, part of me kinda always knew we would - we're quite stubborn. But we really, actually did it. Crazy! And tomorrow, we get to sleep in our own beds!
