Tulsa was the site of our second oil change of the trip. Kinda crazy to me just how far we've come. Like... I know we've come a really long way, we're 40 states in, plus DC and 2 Canadian provinces, we've been on the road for 38 days... But it's still hard to comprehend.
Today's focus is really on Route 66 oddities. We've talked about it a little bit on this trip, but the kids really only know about it from the Cars movie where they talk about it and how adding the interstate caused all of these smaller towns to basically just die. We saw quite a few things, but these are our favorites from today (not necessarily in the order we saw them - some were from later in the day)
Next, we headed to Oklahoma City where we went to their zoo. Admission was free today for some reason. I don't think I' ve ever really been a fan of zoos, but this one ranks pretty low on my list. There just wasn't much to see, and they charged for pretty much everything else - no sea creatures other than sting rays which cost $5 per person to look at. We did see a few animals like ravens, condors, a porcupine, a tanuki, a fishing cat, a leopard, and some African painted dogs. We went on an endangered animals carousel ($3 per person) which was the slowest carousel I've ever been on in my life, and then let the kids play on a nearby playground for 15 or 20 minutes before heading out.
Another bit of Route 66 miscellany is the Leaning Tower of Texas, a water tower that was specifically built to look like it's falling over to get people to pull over at the nearby gas station. "K" and I took a selfie and the Leaning Tower of Pisa when we were in Italy so we recreated the picture with this tower before heading to Amarillo, Texas for the night.
