Day 35

August 04, 2023

Last night was interrupted by someone who was... not in the right head state. Drunk, high, or half asleep, we're not sure, but at about 4am he tried several doors around us (including ours) before laying down to sleep right outside our door. "K" went in the bathroom in our room (so she wouldn't wake anyone up - she's so nice) and called the front desk who came up and handled it. It turns out he was staying in the room across the hall but didn't have his key or any of his ID on him, so it was a bit of an ordeal to get him in there. However, the lady saying "Suh! Suh! You cayn't sleep heah!" was pretty funny.

The rest of our morning went by uneventfully, and we made our one and only stop at the Vicksburg National Military Park in Vicksburg, MS. Vicksburg was the last conservative stronghold keeping the south from being split by Ulysses S Grant and his army. This was an informative trip, and I had almost no knowledge about this going into it and I feel like I learned a lot. I also feel like they did a good job presenting the information in a way that was less likely to offend some of the more, uh, "traditional" southerners that may come - it is in Mississippi, after all.

My favorite part of this one, though, was that it was a drive-through museum/monument park. The route is 3.5 miles long and littered with monuments honoring the lives that were lost and important points of interest in the area. There was also an app with audio narration for more than 10 points of interest, which was also cool. I think my favorite was The USS Cairo, an old military steamboat. It got destroyed back in the civil war, so it was mounted far from water (although the Mississippi river no longer goes right past Vicksburg anyway), but it was mounted in a way that we could go on it and explore.

Lifelike soldiers!
